My grandmother, Eloise PITMAN CLARKE, was born in Silptca, Alabama- close to Coffeeville. Her parents were Orlando Beale (Bud) PITMAN and Sallie Belle CLELAND. My great grandmother, Sallie, had a brother, Sam, who was sheriff of Clarke County in the 1940s. Does anybody have any info on this? It was a CLELAND who married a BURKS from Mobile before the Civil War. The BURKS were suppose to have a home on Government St. in Mobile The story goes that they had a home on Government St. and country home on the Tombigee River and when the yankees came to Mobile at the end of the war, they hid their silver in some lard and stuck it down the well. Some of it was found but the ones that weren't I guess was disperse among family. Sallie B. gave all her girls 1 piece of silver, including my grandmother, Eloise. That was Eloise, Maggie, Mary Lou and Jeanette. When I was a little girl, spending the night with my grandmother, I used to sit and hold the fork with the faded 'B' on the handle, and imagine all sorts of stories.

I am researching the connection of my HALL line to the Edward BEDSOLE family that moved to Clarke CO in 1866. One of Edwards daughters, Virgina Hellon(Helen)(1852-1939) married a James Madison Hall(1845-?. The story goes that she came as a young bride of 13yrs old with her husband and HER family to Clarke Co from Walton CO FL. I am trying to prove that this James Madison HALL is the same James M HALL, son of Sessom and Nancy BEDSOLE HALL. Also it seems that another of Sessom Halls sons, William L HALL might have married another of Edward BEDSOLES daughers, Haludah Catherine. According to "The Mitchem War" of Clarke Co. Virginia Hellon is buried at Smith Cemetary and lived at the HALL Field, near Open Field Bridge in 1893. Any ideas?? Is the listing for Smith Cem online? Jan

WAY, LUKER, LUCAS My Great Grandfather Aaron Way, b SC last 3 mo of 1823 or first six of 1824, married Mary B. Luker, dau of Wm Luker,in Clarke Co. on 15 July 1855. Wm Luker's wife was a Lucas. I"m interested in leads on all three families. Aaron Way; and Mary Luker Way are in the 1860 US census for Prairie Bluff Community of Wilcox Co., Ala. with following children: Henry [Burl] Wayage 6 and "Puss" Way age 2.. Aaron Way is listed as a carpentar worth $120. There has been some confusion between him and an Aaron Way of same age, a planter worth $1,000 with wife Ellen in St. James Goose Creek Parish (now Charleston Co.) SC. When Aaron Way married Mary B. Luker, he would have been 31 or 32, rather old to marry in those days. Am interested in any info on his parents, previous marriage, etc. Also, son Henry seems a little old at 6 since US 1860 c;ensus taken in Sept. 28, 1860 and the marriage was 15 July 1855 performed by a Minister of the Gospel Wm Lin---illegible. Are there any old newspaper accounts of marriages, obits for this period available in Clarke Co. Many, many thanks for any lead.

My Great Grandfather was Ira ANDEREWS born @1860 My grandfather was Thomas Lonnie ANDEREWS born Oct 13, 1900 in Clarke County Alabama. (Grove Hill area.) I think Thomas Lonnie's sisters and brothers were also born in Clarke County. Their names were: Frank ANDEREWS, Fernie ANDEREWS, Henry ANDEREWS, Ethyl ANDEREWS and Donnie ANDEREWS (Female). I think there may have been more. They were all probably born late 1890's, early 1900's. I am hoping to firm up some of these dates and locations so I can at least have a good starting point.

DEAN/DEANE Family lived in Suggsville during early 1800's - John DEAN SR apparently donated land for a cemetery and helped establish the first Methodist Church in the area. We spent all weekend looking for signs of the old church/cemetery but didn't find local residents who knew about it. Apparently John DEAN SR lived very near Suggsville as stated in his obit - from local paper referring to him as born of Va, Rev War Veteran, former Judge, etc. I know several of John's children married brothers and sisters of the HOPKINS Family. The group travelled to Arkansas together before the outbreak of the Civil War. From Arkansas the family moved to Texas. Surnames in Texas include: HOPE, WEBB, ROBERTS, SAUTER. Any help is appreciated.

1830 census of Clarke Co. has Richard and Richard V. RIDGELL listed, with a total of 11 children, where did these RIDGELLS go? I have found very little information after this census, only a Daniel O., Joseph and son Benjamin, and a Sarah RIDGELL/RIDGILL are found in Clarke records so far, any info on what happened to these RIDGELLS would be appreciated, I suspect a group of them went to Texas between 1839-1860, but have no proof these are Clarke Co. Am searching for information on ancestry of Charlie Washington Skipper of Clarke County, AL. I know that he, his parents and siblings lived in Bashi, Clarke County when he was born or when he was very young -- late 1890s and early 1900s. He and all known siblings are deceased; their names are: Grover Henderson SKIPPER (wife Reesie/Ressie), Burl Franklin SKIPPER (wife Lucy Dell Hays), Mattie (husband Will), Clevie (husband Croman), Jessie (husband Ed). It is possible that there was another male sibling - - Ira. After the death of Burl Franklin SKIPPER (year of death unknown) his wife Lucy married his brother, Charlie Washington SKIPPER in February 1916 in Clarke County, AL
